In some parts of Berlin, you may stumble upon a Kustautomat (which translates as Art Vending Machine).
These dispensers previously sold cigarettes and even condoms.
What you get in exchange for your money – in this case €4 – is an original piece of artwork, usually a sketch, small painting, or a poem.
This particular machine offers you animals, local, regional, and coastal art.
This special little lady went for the animals – if you can believe that.
They come in little boxes resembling a packet of cigarettes, including a warning that the contents might unsettle, enrich, and excite you, and can be addictive.
My daughter got a dog – I think.

Each box also contains information about the artist.
I will link to a map of known locations for these cool little gems.
You can even have the art sent by mail.
Makes for a great souvenir.
Someone even put together a map of Kunstautomaten locations in Berlin and throughout Germany.
